All spines look curved when you look at them from the side. When viewed from behind, spines should appear straight. Scoliosis is a curve of the spine that is visible from behind.

Almost all of us have mild curvature in our spines, but about 30% of the population has a curvature pronounced enough to be called scoliosis.

In this video, Ed explains and demonstrates exercises for an idiopathic scoliosis, that is, a scoliosis with no known cause. If the doctors know why you have a scoliosis, this series of functional movements may not help you. But if you don’t know why you have a scoliosis, these movements are very likely to help you straighten your back by lengthening shortened muscles, strengthening over-stretched ones and correcting the rotation of the spine.
